Drafting is a career with a promising future, since skilled and talented draftsmen are in high demand. Drafters can work in a many industries, making blueprints for buildings, scenery, toys or roads and highways. Draftsmen should be detail-oriented, analytical, mathematical, artistic and creative.

        Study drafting. There are different levels of degree options available. Get a two-year degree from a technical school like ITT Tech or any community college. Or get a four-year Bachelor's degree from a university, which will provide a more in-depth and concentrated training in a specialized area.

        Become adept at hand and CAD drafting. Any decent institutional training should provide this. There are pros and cons with each type of drafting, and preference of type will vary among employers and projects.

        Earn certification through American Design Draft Association by passing an ADDA test. There are no educational requirements to take the test. Being certified suggests that you are trained in the common drafting conventions> Participation with the ADDA will keep you updated on changes in practice.

        Choose an area of specialization. A mechanical drafter helps to design products. Architectural draftsmen makes blueprints for builders to construct architect's designs. Aerospace draftsmen make drawings of airplanes, helicopters or satellites. Different areas of expertise have different educational requirements.

        Explore a variety of job opportunities. Many draftsmen get hired full-time at companies, such as architecture firms or manufacturing companies. You also can work as a freelancer.
