Short hair is easy to manage, but you still have to spend time styling it. No matter what kind of look you're going for, you'll need the right products to make your short hair look great.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Have your stylist fix your hair after she cuts it. She can guide you and let you know what products work best with your hair's texture, while considering the style you're going for.

  2. Step 2

Try out different products from the grocery store. Go ahead and experiment with these products for short hair and figure out what type of products work best for you. However, keep in mind that although these products can be okay for styling your hair, salon quality is preferable.

  3. Step 3

Test out different hairstyles. You can spike very short hair or you can slick it down. It can have a wet look or a more "fluffy" look. The texture can be stiff or soft. Play around and find what you like best.

  4. Step 4

Create different looks with the same product by applying it to wet or dry hair. If you apply a glue or gel to wet hair, you'll get a slick style. If you apply the same product to dry hair, it'll end up looking fluffier. Wax shouldn't be applied to wet hair since it won't hold, but you can use putty on either wet or dry hair to create the same look.

  5. Step 5

Decide which look you want to go for, and then head to the salon to pick up a quality product. You may need to ask an employee about the texture of the products available; for example if you've decided you like hair wax, you'll need to find the waxes and salon brands usually have nondescript, abstract names.

Tips & Warnings
  • Generally speaking, gels are slick and provide a more stiff, wet look. Glues are thick and provide great hold, however you choose to style your hair. Wax is best for piecing your hair into chunks. Putty is sticky but not as thick as glue and is good for giving your hair a spiky but soft look.
