You've done the hard part: you've gotten through school and you've started your own architecture firm. Now all you need to do is get clients. There are some simple things you can do to market your services and attract clients.

1
Create a logo, if you haven't already. It should convey not only your business name, but give an impression of the type of services you offer. For example, if you specialize in upscale architecture, you'll want to create something that gives off a feeling of luxury. Use the logo on any promotional materials you make.
-
2
Hand out your business cards to everyone you know. See if you can post them on community bulletin boards, especially in places where those perusing the board may be looking for services like yours.

3
Install a sign outside your office, preferably, something that people can see from the road. Every time a potential customer passes by, he'll see your logo and your name will subconsciously seep into his mind.
-
4
Design a website to market your services. It should look professional and list your contact information and the types of services you perform. If you have client testimonials, put these on the website, as well as, pictures of your previously completed work. Think of it as an online portfolio.

5
Spread the word about your new firm. The Internet is one of your greatest marketing tools, so use it in any way you can. Look into free advertising as well as perhaps some paid ads, if you can afford it. Take advantage of a free listing on Google's Local Maps.
-
6
Network with other local businesses. Talk to local contractors and real estate agents. You may be able to get some business this way. They can refer their clients to you to take advantage of your services, and vice versa. It's a win-win situation for everyone.
-
7
Take out ads in local periodicals. Full color magazine ads are nice looking and may get you some clients. See if you can do a trial run for three months to determine if these ads get you any business.

Tips & Warnings
Don't forget that word-of-mouth is the best advertising for a service business. Strive to always make your clients happy and you can be sure they'll tell their friends about the great work you did. Use them to market your business for you.
Anytime you're working on a project (and even possibly after it's complete, depending on the client), have a large sign outside the building stating who's in charge of the architectural design.
Because marketing an architecture firm is somewhat of a new concept to some owners, they will sometimes simply hire a marketing expert to do all of their promotions for them, however, if you're a small firm, this may not be a viable option.
