How to Become an Artillery Officer
A Field Artillery officer is the mastermind behind lethal and non-lethal firepower maneuvers. He's a warrior and combat arms leader who possesses tactical, technical, interpersonal, conceptual and decision-making skills along with confidence, intelligence, terrain sense, discipline, mental toughness and physical readiness. To become a Field Artillery officer you must possess leadership qualities, meet certain educational requirements and undergo a specific training course.

Contact a recruiter. If you're a civilian, the first step toward becoming a Field Artillery officer is to sit down with a recruiter to discuss your options (see Resources). There is more than one way to become a Field Artillery officer and you want to develop a plan that works for you.

Earn a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution. You must possess a college degree to become a commissioned officer in the military. A recruiter can tell you which Army ROTC scholarships are available to you if you're preparing for college or if you're already a college student.

Apply for the Green to Gold program if you are on active duty but still need to earn a baccalaureate degree to become a commissioned officer.

Submit an application for Officer Candidate School (OCS) if you're on active duty and already have a baccalaureate degree. Your experience with a Field Artillery unit is invaluable as it demonstrates your character as well as your abilities to become a Field Artillery officer. This is an ideal situation for anyone who wants to become a Field Artillery officer.

Complete the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course once you fulfill the requirements to become a commissioned officer.
