How to Use Pyramid or Box Traps in Crabbing
Using a pyramid (also called folding star) or box trap is similar to using a ring net trap. These traps are made of metal and the sides of the trap open up when the trap is resting on the bottom. The pyramid trap works in stronger currents or places other than flat, sandy bottoms. Pyramid or box traps are easy enough for children to use.

1
Secure the pyramid or box trap with a line that's long enough to reach the bottom underwater. Most likely this kind of trap already has strings attached so that once it is set, you can pull the strings to close the trap. Connect the securing lines to the strings already in place on the top of the trap.

2
Select an appropriate bait, such as turkey neck, bull lip, eel or menhaden.

3
Tie the bait to the middle of the bottom of the trap. Stick a piece of wire through the bait and tie this wire to the mesh in between the rings. Alternatively, put the bait inside a bait bag if your trap comes with one.
-
4
Lower the trap until it lies flat on the bottom. Tie the other end of the securing line to the pier or boat.
-
5
Wait about 5 minutes then pull the trap quickly to the surface so the crab remains trapped.
-
6
Open a side panel and dump the crab into a bucket. Shake the trap if necessary to get the crab out.
