1. Determine the make and model number of your hard drive. You can do this on your Windows computer by clicking on "Control Panel" and "System."

2. Figure out what kinds of updates are needed. Different types of technology require different upgrades. If you have an Apple hard drive, the updates will be different from a personal computer. Make sure you know what updates are necessary before you look for them. Call the support desk. If you aren't sure which updates are needed for your hard drive, call the help desk of the company who sold you your hard drive.

3. Look at your old software. When you buy certain computers and hard drives, a separate disk with updates often comes with the purchase. Check this disk to see if it has updates for your hard drive.
