The messenger list in Yahoo! Messenger is your list of contacts. You'll use this list to communicate with friends and business associates. In order to communicate with someone using Yahoo! Messenger, you must first add them to your messenger list.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Add contacts. Begin populating your Yahoo Messenger messenger list with people who you know already have Yahoo! Messenger. From the "Contacts" menu in Yahoo! Messenger, choose "Add to Messenger List." Type in the person's email address, hit the "Next" button and enter a short message asking the person to confirm your request to add him to your messenger list.

  2. Step 2

Search for contacts who might have Yahoo! Messenger. Some of your friends might use Yahoo! Messenger without you knowing it. To look for these people, choose "Import Contacts" from the "Contacts" menu. Yahoo! Messenger searches your Yahoo! address book and Microsoft Outlook contacts for Yahoo! Messenger users.

  3. Step 3

Invite people to join. If you have friends or business associates you want to add to your messenger list but who aren't currently Yahoo! Messenger users, you can invite them to join. Choose "Invite People to Join" from the contacts menu. Then, enter the email addresses of the people you want to invite and type a short message.

  4. Step 4

Create groups. Groups are a way to organizing your contacts in your messenger list. Go to the "Contacts" menu, then to "Organize Messenger List" and choose "Create New Group." Enter a name for the group, such as "Work" or "Family" and hit "OK."

  5. Step 5

Move your Yahoo! Messenger contacts into the appropriate groups in your messenger list. By default, all new contacts are added to the Friends group. To move contacts, click on them and drag them to the appropriate group.
