The Dodge Caravan was the forerunner to start the trend known as the minivan. Ideal for families and moderately priced, the Caravan is still one of the highest ranked minivans on the road. Even its daddy, the Grand Caravan, has proved to be winner for Dodge.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • New 12-volt battery
  • Socket wrench
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Wire brush
  • Battery terminal puller
  1. Step 1

Find the battery under the hood on the driver's side, near the front. It is relatively easy to reach, unless you are short. Bring a step stool to the job if you are less than 5-foot-4 or so.

  2. Step 2

Remove the handle that covers the battery and take off the ground wire. Remove the cable ends from the battery terminals with a battery terminal puller.

  3. Step 3

Lift the battery out of the compartment. Use the wire brush to clean the surface that holds the battery. Clean the insides of the connector cables with a pointed wire brush. Keep your gloves on at all times to avoid getting acid on your hands.

  4. Step 4

Rinse off the cables and battery tray or wipe with damp cloth and let them dry out.

  5. Step 5

Place the new battery on the shelf. Place the correct cable on each terminal and tighten securely with pliers or a socket wrench. Replace the battery holder and cover.

Tips & Warnings
  • Look for a white, chalky substance which means the battery needs replacing.
  • Never smoke when replacing a battery.
  • Wear gloves when handling battery and battery cables
  • Safely dispose of the old battery at an auto parts store or recycling center.
