If you have a damaged door jamb, first try to repair it. If this is not possible, you can replace the door jamb yourself. Of course, first you will need to remove the damaged door jamb.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Putty knife
  • Hacksaw blade with handle
  • Hammer
  • Power or hand saw
  • Wood Chisel
  1. Step 1

With a putty knife, break the seal on the paint on the door jamb between the molding and the jamb and between the molding and the wall.

  2. Step 2

Pry the molding away from the door jamb and the wall with your putty knife until the nails are exposed.

  3. Step 3

Saw each nail with a hacksaw blade attached to a handle between the molding and the wall. This will keep the front of the molding intact. Alternatively, if you're not concerned about keeping the integrity of the door jamb, you can remove the nails with the claw of a hammer.

  4. Step 4

Using a power saw or a handsaw, cut across the side of the jamb horizontally a couple of inches from the top jamb to break off the side jamb from the top jamb.

  5. Step 5

Pry off as much of the side jamb from the wall as you can. Split the rest of the jam gently with a wood chisel and a hammer until it can be detached.

  6. Step 6

Repeat this process for the other side of the jamb until you have removed all of the door jamb from the sides.

  7. Step 7

Remove the top jamb, as well, if need be, or you can just fit the new side jambs onto the wall and fit them into the top jamb as long as is not damaged.
