Installing a sliding glass door can add more light to your room as well as give the impression of bringing the outside into your home. Here we will discuss installing a sliding glass door jamb.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Create a header from 2 2-by-6 inch boards with an additional board of OSB or some other material in between.

  2. Step 2

Install the header and nail or screw it securely in place with 3-inch nails. Toe-nail it into any studs that are existing, including any that you cut to install the sliding glass door.

  3. Step 3

Screw the studs in place with 2 ½-inch decking screws to create the sides of the door jamb for the sliding glass door. If you are concerned about damaging the wall coverings around the area where you are installing the door jamb for the sliding glass door, you can pre-drill the holes for the screws to cause less vibration.

  4. Step 4

Cut your 2-by-4 inch boards for the jack studs for the door jamb of the sliding glass door. Insert them between the header and the floor and screw them in place. Cut 2 more studs per side and screw these in place as well.

  5. Step 5

Tack a 1-by-4 inch board on either side of the opening, and use it as a guide to siding so you can create new trim to go around the new door jambs you have created for your sliding glass door.
