As an independent contractor you depend on yourself for personal and professional success. From the moment you declare your autonomy, you are responsible for everything from monthly expenses and retirement to insurance. Unlike a large business, it is often difficult for an individual to find the perfect insurance plan. There are plans for everyone; the trick is to find a plan with the most coverage for the lowest rate.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Know what type of coverage you need. Some independent contractors need family coverage, while others need an individual plan.

  2. Step 2

Research insurance providers for your area; consider obtaining insurance through a small local company or a large national organization.

  3. Step 3

Meet with an insurance professional. They offer an overview of plan and provider options.

  4. Step 4

Look on the Internet. Some websites specialize in matching individuals and families with the right insurance plans (see Resources below).

  5. Step 5

Consider your deductible. Calculate the amount you can afford to pay each year and in the event of an emergency.

  6. Step 6

Make a list of your provider options. You should also list all the plans each provider offers.

  7. Step 7

Contact the insurance provider for more information. Insurance providers have information readily available to send to individuals, businesses and families who inquire about plans.

  8. Step 8

Decide on how to pay your premium. Some companies automatically withdraw the amount from your account, while others send an invoice each month.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure to talk to your health care provider before purchasing an insurance plan. The office needs to be on a preferred list of providers.
  • Remember, insurance agents cannot always get you the best rate. It may be more beneficial to find a plan on your own.
