When your car needs repairs or a tune-up, the costs can add up, and you may end up having to dispute a mechanic's bill if you're not in agreement with the total cost. 1. Make note of your mechanic's billing practices. Receiving a written estimate of the charges ahead of time can help ward off bill disputes. Large auto body shops may post their hourly rates on a large sign that is visible to customers. The mechanic should contact you to seek permission before making any repairs to your vehicle.

2. Review your bill in person with your mechanic. Your bill will contain categories of charges, such as labor and parts. Request that your mechanic explain each and every charge on your bill, and compare those explanations to your estimate and/or whether the mechanic sought your permission before completing those services.

3. Contact local mechanics to compare rates. Although other mechanics may charge less or more for similar service to your vehicle, the bill should be comparable in cost.

4. Determine whether insurance or warranties cover any outstanding bills. Check to see if your vehicle is still under warranty and whether the repairs made fit into your warranty clause.

5. Place your dispute into writing. If you're still in dispute with the mechanic over the bill, it's time to address the issue with the mechanic's boss or headquarters. Writing a letter explaining the full details of your dispute, as well as providing documentation of comparable rates and/or failure of the mechanic to follow any estimates will aid you in this process.
