How to Tie a Hackamore
A hackamore is a headgear for a horse that uses a large knot known as a bosal instead of a bit. A rider ties a rope known as a mecate around the bosal to use as the reins. The following steps will show how to tie a mecate to the hackamore.

1
Make a knot in one end of the mecate and wedge the knotted end between the two lengths of the hackamore just above the bosal from the rear of the hackamore.
-
2
Wrap the mecate counterclockwise at least twice around both lengths of the hackamore beginning from the bottom and working your way upward. The more turns you make, the shorter the resulting reins will be.

3
Push the mecate's working end between the two lengths of the hackamore from the front. Make a loop with the mecate's working end to form reins of the desired size and wrap the working end once around the length of the hackamore on the horse's left.
-
4
Pass the mecate's working end around the length of the hackamore on the horse's right from the back. Wrap the working end twice more around both lengths of the hackamore and the reins.

5
Slip the mecate's working end under the rear portion of the two wraps made in Step 4 from the front. Bring the mecate's working end over the top of the wraps and slip it under the front portion of the top two wraps from the rear. Pull it tight and bring the reins thus formed over the horse's head.
