If you have a problem with roaches inside of your home, getting rid of them, and keeping them from returning, can be an ongoing battle. The best approach to controlling roaches usually involves a combination of several different techniques. If the infestation is not too bad, sugar and baking soda might kill them off for you.

From Quick Guide: Pest Control Guide
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Mix together baking soda and white granulated sugar in a 1:1 ratio. If you are mixing more than you intend to use at once, store the extra in a sealed jar. Label the jar clearly so no one accidentally uses it.

  2. Step 2

Fill small containers with the sugar and baking soda mixture. The tops from 1-gallon milk jugs are a good size for use with roaches.

  3. Step 3

Place the containers in out of the way places where roaches gather, such as under the kitchen sink. Be sure the mixture is not put any place where children or pets can get to it.

  4. Step 4

Put small containers of water out close to each container of baking soda and sugar that you placed. Check the water and the sugar and baking soda every couple of days and re-fill them as needed.

  5. Step 5

Wait a few days to see if you notice a decrease in the number of roaches. The theory is that the sugar attracts the roaches to the mixture. They eat the sugar and baking soda and then go to the water dish for a drink. The combination of water and baking soda creates a gas in the roaches' stomach that causes their stomachs to burst and kills them.

Tips & Warnings
  • After you stop seeing roaches in your house and you think the problem is all gone, it is still a good idea to keep some baking soda and sugar out, as well as the accompanying water dishes. This will kill any stray roaches that wander through your house before they have a chance to reproduce.
  • Roaches are cannibalistic and eat the bodies of those that die, so you do not see dead roaches around the house after they eat the sugar and baking soda.

on 9/23/2008 Do NOT place water anywhere. This is what the roaches need to live on. They do not blow up from gas either. What happens is they are poisoned only. My additional tip is to use patrol. jelly around plant rims and other places you don't want them to cross. If you want to catch them then line a jar with petrolatum and sugar. They will enter but can't escape.
