Step 1
Sit in a comfortable cross legged position. In the advanced practice of channel cleaning breath, the yogi will sit in a lotus position; however, this is often difficult for beginners and even intermediate students. Instead, choose a cross legged position that works for your and if necessary, support your knees with bolsters.
-
Step 2
Rest a bolster across your knees and place your elbows onto the bolster. Your hands should lift up towards your face. Keep your back tall and straight throughout the exercise and either focus your gaze in a single location, or close your eyes.
-
Step 3
Close your right nostril with your right hand and inhale slowly and deeply through your left nostril. After completing a full exhalation, close the left nostril, opening the right. Slowly exhale through the right nostril. Start the cycle again, inhaling through the right nostril and exhaling and inhaling through the left.
-
Step 4
Repeat the nostril breathing three to five times and then rest to breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth. If you like, you may take this time to chant mantras, or simply rest in silence. After three to five normal breaths, return to the channel cleaning breath. Continue for as long as you like.
