The reclining big toe pose, also known as the sleeping big toe pose, is an intermediate yoga pose that offers a deep stretch through the groin and legs. Because the backs of the legs are often an extremely sensitive area on beginner yogis, using a yoga strap can help you ease into the full pose comfortably.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Lie on your back with your neck long and extend your feet in front of you. Exhale and bend your knees, drawing them tight into your chest. Center a yoga strap around the ball of your right foot and then exhale again as you gently lower your left leg to the ground. Extend the left leg and flex your foot, pulling the toes up.

  2. Step 2

Press down through your left heel and lift your right leg, straightening the knee and drawing your toes down. Extend your arms straight and pull the strap tight, feeling a deep stretch through the back of the leg. Breathe deeply into this position for a moment.

  3. Step 3

Turn your head to the left and release your left arm from the strap, extending it out to the left side, palm facing down. Grip the strap firmly in your right hand and open the leg out to the right. Lower the leg as near to the floor as you can, keeping the knee straight and strap taut.

  4. Step 4

Hold the reclining big toe pose for 30 to 60 seconds and then exhale as you pull the strap and lift the leg up straight. Bend then knee and release the strap. Draw your left knee into your chest and then repeat the toe pose on the opposite side.
