1
Figure out if your wedding cake baker will transport the cake for you. If she offers this service, it's a good idea to pay extra for it so you don't have to worry about it.
-
2
Request the baker to box the cake up in different layers. You can assemble it at the reception site and you won't risk damaging it during transport. This is mandatory if your wedding cake has pillars separating the different layers. If each layer is simply stacked onto another, it is possible to move it assembled; just make sure the baker uses a box that is sufficiently sturdy and large.

3
Ask the baker if he can provide a strong base support for the largest layer. If you're planning to transport the cake fully assembled, this is especially important. Fiberboard or very strong cardboard works well.
-
4
Get help carrying the cake to your car, as most wedding cakes are very heavy. Once it's loaded up, drive carefully and take turns very slowly. Don't worry if people are honking at you.
-
5
Place a non-skid mat underneath the cake during transport. People commonly use these mats under rugs to hold them in place over a slick surface like tile or wood. This will help hold the cake in place while you turn corners and accelerate.
-
6
Talk to the people who run the reception hall and ask them to bring you a cart upon arrival. Carefully move the cake onto the cart and slowly wheel it into the venue and next to the table it will sit on. With assistance, move the cake into place and assemble it if needed.

Add any finishing touches to the cake. Decorate the table; if you have a board underneath the cake to support it, try to cover it up.

Tips & Warnings
Think about renting a van or SUV to transport your wedding cake. Remove the back seats so the cake has a large area in which to sit. Someone can accompany the cake by sitting in the back with it to hold it.
Never set a cake box on the seat of a car. The seats are not level and if you turn too fast, the box can fall off the seat and ruin its contents.
