Preventing tartar buildup is vital if you want to avoid gum disease. Tartar is plaque that has hardened onto the teeth. It usually builds up around the gum line and thus can lead to diseases like gingivitis. Another downside to tartar buildup is that the teeth can stain more easily, because tartar makes the teeth porous.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Brush your teeth at least twice a day. If you can, brush after every meal. It's important to practice good brushing habits, so ask your dentist about how to brush your teeth properly.

  2. Step 2

Floss your teeth at least once a day, but again, preferably after each meal. Be thorough when flossing; if you need advice, ask your dental hygienist.

  3. Step 3

Establish a routine for brushing and flossing. If you can set a schedule for yourself, it'll be easier to stick with it.

  4. Step 4

See your dentist and hygienist regularly. Get your teeth cleaned every 6 months per common recommendation; unless you have gum disease or other issues, then every 3 months is the recommended time frame. If you have problems with tartar buildup, your dental professional may do a painless procedure called "scaling" in which tartar is scraped from the teeth.

Tips & Warnings
  • There are a few brands of toothpaste formulated for controlling tartar buildup. If you've had your gums scaled on multiple occasions, your dentist may recommend that you use one of these toothpastes.
  • Don't try to remove the tartar yourself. After it's completely mineralized, tartar is very hard and if you try to remove it yourself, you can chip your enamel. This enamel doesn't grow back, so you'll need a cap or veneer to protect your tooth if you chip it.
