Instructions
  1. Step 1

Research the information or bill you wish to send the letter about. If it is in regard to a particular piece of legislation, find the exact name of the bill and its number.

  2. Step 2

Write a rough draft of the letter. In the first paragraph introduce yourself and present your credentials. Be sure to include your name, address and phone number. In the second paragraph explain your specific concerns. In the third and last paragraph tell the Governor what you would like him to do. Issue a call to action.

  3. Step 3

Keep the letter short and to the point. Write in your natural voice. Keep your emotions out of the letter.

  4. Step 4

Prepare the inside address and salutation of the letter. Address the letter to the Governor "The Honorable John (or Jane) Smith" followed by the remaining lines of the Governor's address. The salutation should read "Dear Governor Smith:"

  5. Step 5

Edit your letter to the Governor. Make sure there are no spelling or grammatical errors. Ask someone to look over your work to make sure you're not missing any errors.

  6. Step 6

Type the letter with a word processing program. Print a copy of the letter. Proofread it one last time and correct any errors if necessary. Sign your name.
