How to Paint a Tub Surround. A tub surround is a great way to spruce up an older bathroom to give it a new look. Unfortunately, as time passes, the new tub surround can need a bit of sprucing up too. Rather than buying another new tub surround, you can brighten the tub surround with epoxy paint.

Step 1

Remove everything from the tub. Clean the walls of the tub surround with a good bathroom cleaner to remove any soap and scum. Be sure to clean all the crevices well. Let the tub surround air dry. While the tub surround is drying, gather your materials for the next steps.

Step 2

Rub the tub surround all over with fine grit sandpaper. Do not rub the tub surround material too hard. You don't want to remove the outer layer of coating; you just want to put a haze on the shine.

Step 3

Wipe the entire tub surround with diluted Muriatic acid. This removes any grit from the sandpaper as well as any other residues that might remain on the tub surround. Remember to allow for plenty of fresh air. Rubber gloves are a good idea as well.

Step 4

Rinse the entire tub surround well with clean water. Allow the tub surround to dry thoroughly.

Step 5

Apply a coat of primer that is suitable for fiberglass. Allow it to dry.

Step 6

Spray paint the entire tub surround with epoxy paint. Painting with a paintbrush or roller isn't very effective for this type of project. Either use a spray gun or use spray epoxy paint. Allow this coat to dry. Your tub surround should look like new when you finish.
