How to Tip Salon Personnel
It's easy to get confused when it comes to tipping at a salon. Everyone knows that servers get 10 to 20 percent of the bill depending on the level of service they gave, but few people know how to actually tip in a salon.

Calculate 10 to 20 percent of the service price. If you're very satisfied with your haircut, nail treatment or massage, it's proper to tip 18 to 20 percent. If you just aren't happy with the service itself or the results of the service (i.e., the stylist didn't listen to your desires), tip only 10 to 12 percent. If the service was just as you expected, 15 percent is appropriate.

2
Find out if your stylist or therapist is the owner of the salon. Etiquette states that owners don't receive tips since they are making money off the other employees. However, if you're uncomfortable not leaving a tip, go ahead and tip according to Step 1.

3
Determine the going rate in your area for other services, like a shampoo. Stylists' assistants and shampooers generally get a flat tip for their services, but this varies from area to area.

4
Tip especially well around the holidays. It's nice to give a "Christmas bonus" to your stylist or therapist. If the person is your regular stylist or therapist and you have a friendly relationship with her, go ahead and tip even more.
