Things You'll Need:
- Screwdriver
- Level
-
Step 1
Remove the curtains and locate the curtain rod mounts. Unscrew the mounts and pull the rod way from the window. Patch the screw holes with a dab of drywall spackle and smooth it out with a finger. Touch up the holes that stand out with paint if exposed with the new pole in place.
-
Step 2
Measure the frame of the window with a metal measuring tape and add 5 inches to each side. Go wider if you're adding additional detail to a room or wish to make the window appear larger. This works well when multiple windows on a wall are not symmetrical or centered.
-
Step 3
Locate the studs or header on each side of the window and use the mounting bracket to mark the position for drilling. If no studs are available, use drywall toggle bolts to hold the pole and hardware firmly in place.
-
Step 4
Mount the support hardware or pole hanger by drilling into the studs and screwing the hardware in place. Ensure each screw is secure and place the pole into the hooks or hardware.
-
Step 5
Place a level across the pole and adjust one end of the hardware by loosening the screws enough to raise or lower the pole until it's level.
-
Step 6
Set the center support under the pole and mark where it meets the wall. Remove the pole and screw the support into the header.
-
Step 7
Install the curtains on the pole and set it into the hooks or snap it into the mount. Adjust the curtains, add tiebacks or accessorize to match the rooms decor.
