Before you change the wax you are using on your boat, you need to properly remove the prior coat. It is important for protection and appearance that two different waxes do not show up on the boat. In order to ensure this isn't the case and to avoid damage, you need to know the proper way to solve this problem.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Purchase a name-brand wax remover. Most wax removers are produced by the same companies that sell the wax. While it is not necessary to get the same brands, it may help avoid compatibility issues.
Step2
Use a polyclay to remove the previous coat of wax from your boat. A polyclay is a stiffer substance which you will rub over the old wax and will take off the old coat without damaging the surface. You can choose to remove the clay or simply apply the new wax over top of it.
Step3
Find a good road tar remover. Road tar remover is developed to remove the most stubborn gunk and grime from surfaces. This will all but ensure removal of your wax by spraying it on your boat and then rubbing it into the wax until it comes off your boat.
Step4
Buy an all purpose cleaner from any grocery or hardware store. An all-purpose cleaner and lots of elbow grease will pull up any wax. However, thick coats of wax may prove really difficult to remove using this method.
Step5
Apply some water and a sponge to your boat and scrub very hard. This method will take longer than the others, but is guaranteed to work. If you don't have time or the budget for removers, this is the way to go.
