Diatomaceous earth is a sedimentary rock formed by the fossilized remains of diatoms. Pool filtration is the most common use for diatomaceous earth. Pool filters use diatomaceous earth to filter out small particles that collect in backyard pools. Diatomaceous is available from many suppliers and with a bit of research you can get a good price for high quality diatomaceous earth.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Buy only diatomaceous earth that is designated as "pool grade". Diatomaceous earth is also used as a natural pest control and not only has a different price but is also processed differently than the pool grade variety. The pool grade diatomaceous earth is chemically treated which melts down the fossilized remains thus creating a more compact product for pool filtration.

  2. Step 2

Contact wholesale distributors if your pool is a large, in-ground variety. Wholesalers will give the best price available, but you have to buy in bulk and have adequate storage facilities. However, shipping costs may cut into your cost savings.

  3. Step 3

Get diatomaceous earth directly from a pool company. Pool centers sell all the supplies necessary for maintaining a backyard pool. The centers can advise you on how to properly apply diatomaceous earth (DE) to the pools skimmers and tell you how to backwash the pool filter when it is time to clean off the dirty DE.

  4. Step 4

Shop at large retail outlets late in the spring for pool filtration products. The stores try to move merchandise quickly and often have great bargains early just before the summer backyard pool season. You need to have enough diatomaceous earth on hand to apply at the beginning of the season and at least one more time during the summer, depending on the frequency of use.

Tips & Warnings
  • Buy diatomaceous earth in 5 to 10 gallon plastic pails. Plastic pails are easy to stack and allow for easy storage. These containers also come in handy when you need to clean up the pool at the beginning and end of the season.
