When it comes to swimming pool filters, you have a variety of choices to use. Most pools use sand filters, but other popular options include diatomaceous earth (DE), zeolite and cartridge filters. DE filters remove particles, some smaller than the human eye can see, better than other types of swimming pool filters but they require more maintenance.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Install the new DE filter. You want to make sure you turn the timer to "off" or "closed" to prevent the system from trying to run without a filter. You should have the manufacturer's directions with your new filter.

  2. Step 2

Add DE powder to your filter, coating the grids. You may need to prime your filter before you do this. The amount of powder varies by model.

  3. Step 3

Set your filtration system to run for 6 to 8 hours each day during heavy use. You can reduce the time during winter months or times when you don't use the pool. Whether you can set the time to handle the changes in use automatically depends on the type of timer installed in your system.

  4. Step 4

Backwash the DE filter at least once a year or any time your filter reads 8 to 10 lbs. above the starting pressure. Your valves should have a backwash option, which you can run after turning off the pump. Alternate between the "rinse" and "backwash" settings until the water runs clear.

  5. Step 5

Add new DE powder to the filter any time you backwash it or clean it. Plan to add new powder about once per month.

  6. Step 6

Monitor the quality of your pool to identify problems in your filtration system. If you see DE powder in the pool, the water seems to filter slowly or the water looks dirty, you may have a problem in your system.

  7. Step 7

Replace the DE filter when it no longer functions correctly after backwashing and cleaning the system.

Tips & Warnings
  • Thoroughly clean swimming pool filters once a year by turning the pump off, draining the water, removing the filter and hosing the grids.
