Fixing your fax machine yourself is a great way to save money. Fax machine repair people charge a large hourly fee. Knowing how to install fax machine parts yourself is a way to cut down on your bottom line. With some patience and a basic understanding of fax machines you can easily install your own parts.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Purchase the part that you need to replace on your fax machine. There are several websites and physical stores that specialize in providing replacement parts for fax machines and copiers like World of Fax. Go to one of these sites to purchase your parts or look in your local yellow pages for the nearest store that sells this equipment.

  2. Step 2

Unplug the fax machine and find the screws that keep the outer shell on. Use your screwdriver to remove this plastic shell and expose the inner-workings of the machine. Use your fax machine service manual to locate the faulty part within the fax machine.

  3. Step 3

Remove the defective fax machine part. Depending on what part of the machine you are replacing, you may need tools other than the screwdriver. If you are replacing electronic components, you will be alright. However the more mechanical aspects will require wrenches or other tools. Replace a defective fax machine bulb by turning the fax machine over and removing the bottom panel of the unit. Wearing a glove and not touching the bulb directly, remove the old bulb from the fax machine. Screw the new bulb into the machine and replace the bottom of the unit.

  4. Step 4

Apply all connections that the old part had and tightly fasten in any screws or bolts necessary for the proper operation of the fax machine. When you need to replace an electrical component of your fax machine, order the exact model number of the component to ensure a proper repair. Using a screwdriver, unscrew the old electrical part. Unattach it to the fax machine by unscrewing the wire screws. Then replace the part and screw the electrical wires back into the fax machine.

  5. Step 5

Screw the shell back on to the top of the machine and then plug it back into an outlet. Run a test fax to ensure that everything is working properly. If not, repeat steps and make sure that all connections are made and the part is correctly installed.
