Step 1
Call a family meeting and lay out the facts, such as how much space you have for the new fridge and what kind of budget you have for the appliance. Let everyone put in their opinions and try to come to some kind of compromise or group decision that everyone can accept.
-
Step 2
Watch for the sales. Typically the best time of year to buy a new refrigerator is in May or June when the new models come out. Retailers are anxious to clear out their inventory and offer some good sales.
-
Step 3
Plan the shopping trip ahead of time. If you like to go to three or four different stores before making a decision and your husband likes to get in and out quickly at one store, talk about your shopping strategy before you leave the house and come to an agreement.
-
Step 4
Spend time in the store playing with the floor models. Open and close the doors. Make sure that you can see clearly to the back of the top freezer. Check out the storage in the doors. Look at how the shelves are attached and what kinds of positions they can be put in.

Step 5
Work with a salesperson to get something free or get the price reduced. Most salespeople who sell big appliances are on some kind of commission or bonus structure and have at least some wiggle room to close the deal. Be prepared to walk away if you can't get free delivery or an additional 10 percent off. Shop on the last day of the month to get the most from your salesperson, since that's when he needs to make his sale numbers.
