Things You'll Need:

  • Money
  • Time
  • Interview Skills
  1. Step 1

One of the first questions you must ask yourself, what is my goal for joining a gym? You may want somewhere to relax, so a fitness facility that has more amenities may be your goal, example; pool, sauna, spa, and massage, this may be what’s best for you. Others may want to workout in a private studio with a trainer with no distractions. Find what works for you and fits your needs.

  2. Step 2

The next step is to shop around and see what’s available. I suggest trying at least 3 gyms/studios a few times. Most gyms will give you a 1 week pass to try it out. Most people like working out close to where they live and I highly recommend this. If it’s not convenient, you’re probably not going to keep it up for long.

  3. Step 3

I recommend shopping the last week of the month. Most of the big gyms have sales quotas that need to be met, so the end of the month is the best time to get the best deal. Be willing to walk away if it doesn’t sound like a good deal. Some sales people tend to put pressure on customers. Stay strong and follow what feels right.

  4. Step 4

Now after you decided what gym best fits your needs, make sure you understand the contract and feel comfortable with the payment structure. There are many options, again find what fits in your budget.

  5. Step 5

Ok, you joined the gym, but not sure where to start. Ask the question again, what are my fitness goals? If your goal is to swim a few laps in the pool and enjoy the spa, then all you need is a brief tour of the pool area. Make sure you understand the procedures and also ask for schedules of classes you may want to attend. Ex. Step, dance, yoga

  6. Step 6

Another person’s goals may be different. You may want to lose weight or gain muscle. Some people may have health issues, but still want to work out at a health club. Then you should look for a club with highly trained people who can help you through your questions and health concerns. You may have arthritis, high blood pressure, or any number of health issues. A lot of people are looking for someone they can trust to help them get in shape, tone their muscles and just to feel better physically.

  7. Step 7
    Personal Trainer

    Personal Trainer

If you’re looking to use the gym equipment and free weights, I highly recommend hiring a personal trainer. Learning the correct form when exercising is one of the most important factors for reaching your goals. Find a personal trainer you feel comfortable with that has a degree and/or a national certification.

  8. Step 8

You will feel better for making the decision to get started with something that’s good for health. You will be amazed at how much more energy you’ll have, also losing those unwanted pounds. Make the decision to start exercising and stick with it.

Take care of your health; it’s your responsibility

Tips & Warnings
  • Many people absolutely need someone who is going to motivate them to keep working out and to help them achieve their goals. What better way than to have your own personal trainer, someone who shows that they care about your well being. Feeling shy or intimidated about joining a gym is probably one the biggest reasons people don't join. Understand, not everyone is in the best shape and to be honest most people are out of shape, that's why they're there.
  • Remember, before undertaking any exercise program one should consult a physician. Any exercise, nutritional or therapeutic opinions stated herein are based solely on my own personal experiences. Everyone is different and I therefore always recommend that before doing any new activity, exercise program, weight loss program or nutritional program, it is best to first check with your own doctor to make sure anything I recommend is OK for you in light of your current medical condition and history. We, of course, cannot be responsible for any problems that may arise because of your particular condition.
