Basic Spin

Here is a step by step guide on how to master doing a basic two foot figure skating spin. A basic but impressive move you can literally learn in minutes.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Figure Skates
  1. Step 1

Stand up straight on the ice with your ice skates on, feet positioned shoulder width apart.

  2. Step 2

Hold your hands out sideways so that your body makes the shape of a cross. Twist your back, arms still out straight either to the left or to the right. Generally skaters prefer to twist towards their dominant hand for this move.

  3. Step 3

Then, arms still out straight, quickly untwist your torso, keeping your hands out straight and still horizontal.

  4. Step 4

As you begin to build momentum bring your hands in towards your chest and cross your arms close to your body so that they intersect each other. This will create the torque necessary to add power to your twist and cause you to spin quickly in place. As long as you make sure to keep your body straight you should be doing a spin at this point.

  5. Step 5

Lastly, put your arms down and prepare for your next figure skating move.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try to stay as straight as possible when spinning.
  • Don't try to learn new figure skating moves without a friend or coach to correct your form. It is easy to learn to use bad form for your new skills when learning without someone ready to point out any mistakes. If you learn to figure skate the right way, you won't have to work on getting rid of flaws in your performance later on.
