Step 1
A good place to start is the play dead trick. Getting your dog to play dead on its side with rewards makes training it to roll over easier.
-
Step 2
Once you get your dog on its side, pet it, rub its belly, and touch its legs. Dogs aren't used to people touching their legs, so doing this will get them used to it.
-
Step 3
There are basically two ways to teach the roll over trick. One way is to say the command "roll over" and then physically roll the dog over from the play dead position onto the other side and then reward with a treat. The other way is to say "roll over" and then show the dog a treat and move the treat to the other side of dog, so that it must roll over to follow it. Then reward with a treat.
-
Step 4
This can be frustrating, but patient and determination will make this work. If you feel frustrated, stop and try again later. Always treat your dog nicely, and you'll eventually get this trick to work!
