Do you dread even the thought of taking kids through airport security? There are usually long lines, frustrated passengers and frazzled nerves for everyone. You need not fear if you prepare yourself and your children for the whole experience. There are ways you can make your airport experience more enjoyable, so read on and head to the airport stress-free.

From Quick Guide: Fly Through Airport Security
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Prepare your kids at home for what happens at the airport security. Let them know of any rules for security that may apply, such as taking off their shoes or walking through a metal detector.

  2. Step 2

Pack the least amount needed in your carry-on bags. Less stuff means less time with kids waiting for airport security to check your bags.

  3. Step 3

Be prepared to fold up strollers or take them out of car seats if asked to by airport security.

  4. Step 4

Have a favorite snack, toy or other rewards on hand to give your kids as a reward for waiting patiently in airport security.

  5. Step 5

Let an airport security worker know you may need assistance if your kids start getting agitated or you sense that a meltdown is coming.

Tips & Warnings
  • Let your kids know that the airport security workers are people of authority who we must listen to for everyone's safety. You can compare them to a police officer who makes airports safe by asking us to do certain things. This image may help a child realize the need to follow their directions.
  • Be prepared for surprises, longer lines or new rules or regulations. Just prepare your kids that whatever happens, they need to stick with you and follow directions.
