How to Remove a Concrete Fountian

There it is, right in the middle of the yard: a huge concrete fountain that is ugly and you want it gone. It is way too big and splashes water all over. When it does have water in it, the water is green and stinks. You have thought of dynamite--it's that bad. Before you get out the sledgehammer, let's have a look at the best way to get rid of that eyesore.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Remove all the water. Pump it out with a utility pump or you can use the pump that is probably in the fountain already. After you get the water out, wet vacuum out all the pond scum and debris that has gathered in there since it was last cleaned out.
Step2
Take out the pump. Unplug it, look for any filter or plumbing and remove it. Turn off any electricity to the outlet, and turn off any water supply if there is one running directly to the fountain. That is unusual, but can happen.
Step3
Asses the position of the fountain. If you find that you cannot just take the fountain apart, then you must resort to the sledgehammer. Now the hard work starts. If the fountain is old, the concrete is strong and might even have reinforcement bars in it. If that is the case, you may need a jackhammer.
Step4
Start with a sledgehammer or a chipping hammer. Find out how strong the concrete is. If it crumbles easy, your job is easier. Continue hammering until the fountain is in easily managed pieces and remove the pieces.
Step5
Consider a jackhammer if you have hammered and hammered and make no progress. You have some old and strong concrete, so rent a jackhammer and be prepared to do some really hard work. Continue using the jackhammer until the fountain is reduced to manageable pieces, and then remove the pieces. If there is a foundation--and there probably is--remove that as well. Now you have a huge ugly spot on your property. You can make a garden bed out of it or just mulch it up until you decide what to do next.
