If you are like many golfers, you enjoy playing with your own clubs when you travel rather than renting clubs. Fortunately, a wide variety of travel bags for golf clubs exist. Several different styles of travel bags are available: one that holds only your golf clubs, one that holds your golf clubs as well as your golf case, soft case models, and hard case models. Whatever you use, you need to make sure it is big enough to hold your clubs.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 48-inch yardstick or a 36-inch yardstick
  • 12-inch ruler
  • Masking tape
  1. Step 1

Obtain the proper measuring tool. Since it is more difficult and less accurate to measure golf clubs with a tape measure, obtain a 48-inch yardstick or a 36-inch yardstick, a 12-inch ruler and masking tape. If you cannot get a a 48-inch yardstick, then you can make one by taping the 36-inch yardstick to a 12-inch ruler using masking tape. Make sure that you tape the two together securely. This will give you the length that you need to obtain an accurate measurement.

  2. Step 2

Select the golf club with the longest length from your set of clubs. One of the nicest facts about measuring your golf clubs to determine the proper size for a travel bag is that you only need to measure the length of the longest club. If you cannot tell which of your golf clubs is the longest, then you will need to measure more than one.

  3. Step 3

Select a flat, level place to stage your golf club. Placing it on the floor or a table is easiest.

  4. Step 4

Measure the golf club from the butt of the grip to the tip of the head. From a standing position, place the tip of the golf club head on the floor. This is the part of the golf club head that is farthest away from the shaft of the club. The butt of the golf grip will be off at an angle, as will the shaft. Place the yardstick behind the golf club so that the butt of the golf grip is directly in front of it. With your eyes level to this portion of the yardstick, take the measurement. This is the length of the golf club.

  5. Step 5

Try using an alternative method of measurement. Place the yardstick along the golf club from the tip of the head, along the shaft, and to the butt of the golf grip. The yardstick will be at a slight angle to the shaft of the golf club. Take the measurement with your eyes level to this portion of the yardstick. This is the length of the golf club.

Tips & Warnings
  • Measure more than one golf club to ensure that you have the longest measurement.
  • Measure the golf club using both methods for better accuracy.
  • If you measure the golf club with the face lines perpendicular to the measuring stick, your measurement will come up short, and the travel bag will be too short in length.
  • Be careful when reading the measurement. If you are in a standing position and your eyes are above the yardstick, it is possible to get a reading that is slightly inaccurate.
