Step 1
Companion Planting
Pest control is one of the many benefits of companion planting. Companion planting works to control pests because plants give off chemicals through their roots, leaves and flowers. Some of these chemicals repel pests. Marigolds, garlic and onions for example repel many pests making them perfect companions for a variety of crops. Here are a few examples of companion plantings that are synergistic:
Tomatoes & Onions or Garlic
Cucumbers & Sunflowers or Corn
Pumpkins & Marigolds
Spinach & Strawberries -
Step 2
Garlic Spray
Garlic spray has been used by organic gardeners for centuries. It is one of the best methods for eliminating pests in your garden. Here is the recipe:
*Crush or chop 2 heads of garlic. (You can use your food processor.)
*Place them in a mason jar.
*Heat 1 cup of water to a boil.
*Pour the boiling water over the garlic.
*Allow it to sit for 24 hours.
*Strain the garlic from the garlic water.
*Place the garlic water in a spray bottle.
*Use the garlic spray on plants in your garden to control pests.
*Store in the refrigerator after using. -
Step 3
Soap & Water
Place 1 quart of water in a spray bottle. Add 2 Tablespoons liquid castile soap. Place the lid back on the bottle and roll it gently from side to side to mix the soap with out causing excess foam. Use this spray anywhere pests are a problem in your garden. -
Step 4
Healthy Plants
This may seem obvious, but healthy plants are not as prone to pests or disease. Begin with proper soil preparation before planting. Make sure your soil has the correct elements for the crop. Keep your plants watered during dry spells to ensure health. This can be accomplished by reusing grey water from your home, or from water collected from your gutters during rainy periods.
