How to Beat Bloggers Block

So many of us are guilty of it--we start a blog with dreams of having a must read, but two months into it we trail off for a variety of reasons--sheer boredom, few readers, and the very worst, feeling like we have nothing to say.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • 5 minutes
  • Your thinking cap!

Step1
MAKE A DATE. We all know that frequency is key to a successful blog (if you're looking for more of an intro to blogging, check out the additional resources!). However, between the gym, the fam, the food, and the fun, there is very little time left over to give to the blog.

Banish this thought from your mind. All you need is five minutes. If you really haven't blogged in a while, choose one day this week that you can spare five minutes.
Step2
Once you've picked your five minute slot, stick to it. This is a date with yourself--you'll be heartbroken if you cancel!
Step3
When you sit down to write, refocus yourself. Your blog should have five keywords (tags, categories) that it centers around. Cooking? Writing? My blog is about making writing a business, so in almost every blog I have a few of the following tags: "writing", "freelancing", "fiction", "money" and "internet media" (or "social media"). Create similar tags for your blog as a whole and remind yourself of them occasionally!
Step4
For the next five minutes, write whatever comes to mind about those five words. It can be one, it can be all five. I tend to write about what has happened in my "writing" day--got a new job, made money on ehow, found new inspiration, developed a new character.
Step5
After five minutes, STOP. Yup, it's that easy. Remind yourself that people like reading short, quick blogs, and you don't have to say anything monumental or well researched--your blog is meant to be a sort of online journal used as a writing tool. So enjoy it!

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't get overwhelmed. Blogger's Block is about being afraid of that blank space--don't stress about it!
  • Write something--anything--at least once a week. It keeps you higher on search engines and more likely to get spontaneous traffic to your site.
  • Don't forget to enjoy it!

on 8/2/2008 Thanks! Another great article. Writing a blog is often hard work. It's easier if you focus on your subject and of course enjoy what you are doing.

on 8/1/2008 You really do have to schedule your writing and just do the time. Check out the The War of Art. Great book that addresses just this thing in a unique way! Thanks for the reminders!
