Checking out your competition before starting a business can give you edge on how to get started and what to avoid. Remember, the point in checking out your competition is not to copy their ideas or wipe out customers, but to learn from them and make your own path.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Passion to start a new business.
  • Phone or Internet service.
  • Determination.
  • Skill of observation.

Step1
Identify potential competition: Look in your area's business directory and do a search online for companies that may attract the same customers. Remember competition can be a good thing.
Step2
Observe how the competitors advertise and deal with their customers. Identify both their strengths and weaknesses. Look how they are planning for changes in the economy and they have changed in the past few years to the market place.
Step3
After looking at the competition determine how your business will be able to compete in the market. What will make your business different from others. It can be a more defined niche, better service, or other factors that make your business stand out.

Tips & Warnings

  • Duplicating your competitors business tactics will only insure failure.
