How to quickly and easily potty train your new puppy, or teach an older dog a new trick!
All new puppy owners struggle with it- potty training your puppy. This is a quick and easy way to house train your pet. Learning to read your new puppies potty signals can be one of the hardest things about potty training. As your pet grows and has more access to your home the chances of catching their pre-potty behavior becomes smaller and smaller. To avoid the need to keep your pet in sight at all times, I suggest teaching your new puppy to ring bells when they need to go out. This is a great house training trick to teach older dogs too!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Set of bells for your door. Bells on a string or ribbon, and sleigh bells will work.
  1. Step 1
Bells from local store, sleigh bells and Poochie-bells

Choose a string of hanging bells. You’ve seen the strings of bells that are hung on door handles around Christmas time, find a set of these and potty training your puppy will be a breeze. Look for bells that won’t harm the surface of your door as metal straps and snaps can scratch as your pooch gets the hang of this.

  2. Step 2

Hang the bells on or next to your door that your puppy or dog will use.

  3. Step 3

Every time you take or let your pet outside ring the bells while giving a command like “potty”. The command can be any word you like but remember to keep it simple, and say it as you ring the bells.

  4. Step 4

Make sure you pet can see and hear you as you complete step 2.

  5. Step 5

    Take puppy or dog out.

Tips & Warnings
  • Praise your pet when they use the bells on their own
  • If your pet is reluctant to ring the bell, use a treat to lure them. Put the treat in your hand and place your hand in front of the bells causing your pet to ring the bells as they take the treat.
  • To reinforce training, whenever you take your pet outside give your command first and have your pet ring the bell. This is great for impressing guests too!
  • How Long Will it Take to Potty Train my Puppy?
  • This, of course, depends on the puppy or dog. Potty training your puppy or dog can take anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks. Most pets pick it up quick, within a week. House training you pet can be quick and easy using this method- Good luck!
