Step 1
Watch current hip hop music videos. All the new moves and choreography will be seen here first. Set aside a half hour or so every day to watch them. If they aren't on the air when you have time to take a peek, try looking them up online (see Resources below).
-
Step 2
Enroll in a class. Yes, you may think that this sort of thing is beneath you. if you already know the basics of hip hop dancing, a class may seem like a true waste of time. Yet, it's a very important part of becoming a better dancer. Brushing up on your skills will help your overall dance floor performance. Choose a funky class to learn new moves, and look up well-respected teachers in your area. If you develop a relationship with a great teacher, you can learn moves you never imagined.
-
Step 3
Go to hip hop clubs as often as you can. Grab a drink (no need for it to include alcohol), and watch the moves on the floor. Sitting and observing on the sidelines can be the best school ever for hip hop dancing. Watch several times before attempting to do it yourself.
-
Step 4
Get moving. Follow the lead of better dancers on the dance floor. Although you may look the fool at first, this will ultimately up your game big time. Don't be afraid to experiment on the dance floor.
-
Step 5
Create your own hip hop moves. Hip hop choreography is only as new as the latest moves. You can create your own and set your own style. You will, at the very least, become a more skilled dancer by creating your own moves. Listen to a song at least a dozen times and write about how it makes you feel. Interpret the song, then get on the dance floor. Express those feelings in the moves that your body makes. Choreography can tell a story through movement and dance.
