A tripod grill can be used throughout the season as a flavorful platform to cook some of your favorite foods on. If you love to cook outdoors and enjoy the smoke infused flavor of an open fire in your food, a tripod grill is the perfect choice.   • Tripod grill
  • Long lighter
  • Newspaper
  • Firewood
  • Grill spatula
  • Grill tongs
  • Food
  • Large cookie sheet
  • Small table
  • Water hose
  • Lighter fluid (optional)

Instructions

    • 1
      Tripod grill

      Set up your tripod grill over your fire pit.

      Make sure the tripod grill grate is raised to the highest setting. Do this by adjusting the metal lever on the side of the grill down, making the grate raise.

      Assemble the firewood under the tripod grill to form a Tee Pee position. Place newspaper under the Tee Pee and light the newspaper with a long lighter.

      Burning embers.

      Allow the fire to form hot embers.

      Place your small table near the tripod grill.

      Place your grilling tools and the large cookie sheet on the small table.

      Grilling tongs.

      Using your grill tongs, place your food on the circular portion of the grill, alternating sides to keep the food even and from falling into the fire.

      Lower the cooking grate on your tripod grill halfway down near the top of the open fire.

      Turn the food every 20 minutes. Adjust the level of the cooking grate if food is getting to hot or too cold.

      Add more wood if necessary to keep the fire hot.

      When the food has finished cooking, remove it and place it on a large cookie sheet.

      Use the water hose to extinguish the fire.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use may need to use a small amount of lighter fluid to light the fire initially. Douse the newspaper with a small amount of lighter fluid, as it will evaporate quicker than if doused on the wood.

  • Make sure you used dry seasoned firewood free of chemicals and pesticides.

  • After the fire has roared, the embers will form.

  • Flavored wood chips such as hickory or mesquite flavored may be added to the logs to provided added smoke flavor and aroma.

  • Use caution when adjusting the food grate over the fire, as the grate and the tripod grill can be very hot.

  • The small table provides a clean workspace for preparing your food and keeping track of utensils and other grill prep items.

  • Keep the small table nearby the tripod grill for easy access and convenience.

  • Use long grill tongs and grill spatulas for ease of use when handling food on the tripod grill and also to prevent spills and accidents.

  • Never spray lighter fluid over and open flame, as this can cause the fire to flare back and cause serious injury.

  • Make sure all food is thoroughly cooked to prevent illness from undercooked food.

  • Use caution when cooking over an open flame as your risk for being burned increases.

  • Keep a garden hose handy at all times in case the fire gets out of control.
