1. Begin by determining what is wrong with your vehicle and if you actually need roadside assistance. If you can fix the flat tire yourself, for example, it will save you time to do just that instead of calling for roadside assistance. If you need a tow, though, than roadside assistance is for you.

2. Call the appropriate number for roadside assistance. If you're driving a Ford, you will need to call 1-800-241-3673; call 1-800-521-4140 if you're driving a Mercury or Lincoln. For all three makes, call 1-800-565-3673 if you're driving in Canada. This will take you to the appropriate roadside assistance operator for your vehicle.

3. Have the proper information ready to tell to the person on the other side of the road. Before you get roadside assistance, the operator will want to check to make sure that you do indeed have Ford Roadside Assistance. You will need to tell him your name, VIN, the make and model of the vehicle you are driving, the color of your car and your license plate.

4. Describe the situation carefully going into specific details. For example, if your car simply died on you while on the highway, you will need to explain what occurred and if you noticed any noises, whether or not you can start the vehicle again, where exactly you are on the road (mile-markers or GPS will help with this) and whether or not you definitely need a tow truck to come.

5. Have patience. It will take some time for the operator to locate the appropriate car repair service and for that service to arrive and offer assistance.
