Instructions

    • 1

Cut a swath of burlap to create your foundation. Depending on how large of a project you want to do, you should cut your cloth to match. If you want a tapestry-sized wall hanging and have the ambition to do that, cut as large of a piece as you please. However, if you are beginning, perhaps a smaller piece will suffice.

    • 2

Gather any additions you plan to make to the burlap. These can be colorful pieces of thread, ribbons, fabric and buttons. In addition, you can think of left-field items to include such as pictures and toys. Think of this as an opportunity to express yourself as an artist.

    • 3

Cut strips of fabric that you want to use to weave or cut strands of colorful threads that you plan on sewing into the burlap.

    • 4

Weave in thread and fabrics. You can follow a design you have in your mind or simply attack the canvas free-form, meaning you will just start sewing without a plan only to see where this experiment takes you.

    • 5

Include buttons and other items into the mix. It might be wise to simply lay these items on the burlap where you think they will go in order to get a good look at their positions before you attach them.

    • 6

Create a hanger for your work of art. Use a thick piece of string or yarn and attach it at each end of the back. Take a framed picture off the wall and look at the wire; this is how you can make your yarn.
