How to Teach Reading With New Dick & Jane Books

Dick and Jane is a popular reading series that has been used for decades to teach children how to read. With a mix of flashcards and the books, the child will gain a strong foundation in sight word vocabulary.

Things You'll Need

• Dick and Jane Books
• Blank index cards
• Marker

Instructions

1. Read ahead in the first story. Make one index card for each word that appears.

2. Review the words with the child prior to reading the story.

3. Read the first story together one time.

4. Have the child read the story to you.

5. Review flashcards of words that the child found difficult.

6. Encourage the child to try to read the story independently.

7. Repeat the process for each additional story.

Tips & Warnings

• Have the child put the word cards together to make his own sentences.

• Practice writing the words in a frequently used words notebook.

• Dick and Jane books are excellent tools for teaching sight words. Be sure to also include phonics instruction for a balance to ensure better reading skills.
