How to Pick Padlocks

How to Pick Padlocks thumbnail
Paper clips open padlocks when keys are missing.

Padlocks secure an individual's personal items against theft and rummaging, but if that individual loses the key used to open the padlock, he won't be able to access the items either. Many padlocks utilize small keys, perfect for both easy transportation and easy misplacement. A person with a missing padlock key may feel helpless, but all is not lost. If a padlock stands between a person and his valuable objects, many padlocks can be picked with two paperclips and a little bit of practice. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Straighten out two paperclips. Leave one straight, and bend the end of the second paperclip into a rough "L" shape.

    • 2

Insert the longer portion of the "L" into the hole forming the bottom part of the keyhole. Apply and sustain a small amount of force to the end of the bent paperclip to create gentle tension in the lock.

    • 3

Insert the straight paperclip into the top of the keyhole. Feel for the pins inside the lock pushing upward as the straight paperclip pin is pushed in.

    • 4

Pull the straight paperclip quickly out of the lock while applying a slight upward pressure to drag the tip of the paperclip across the pins. Simultaneously, shift the gentle tension in the bent paperclip slightly downwards and either clockwise or counter-clockwise -- whichever direction the key normally turns in the lock.

    • 5

Repeat until you perfect the timing and amount of force required and the lock springs open.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not become discouraged. Picking a lock can take a novice multiple attempts.
