From Quick Guide: Seed Starting 101
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Clean up the yard of anything that does not belong. This includes things like toys and trash. Animals and kids will need to stay off of the grass for at least two weeks. A dog run might be needed during this time if you have multiple dogs.

  2. Step 2

Rototill the whole yard. You can rent or buy these online or at your favorite home improvement store. If needed to save you time and energy hire someone to do this for you. It is crucial that you can rototill the whole yard. In areas that are left untouched grass will not grow there.

  3. Step 3

Use a broadcast spreader to spread the grass seed around the yard. If you do not have a spreader you can use your hand. When done spread starter fertilizer around the yard also. Usually the fertilizer is too thick to fit in the broadcast spreader. You will need to use your hand. Aim for decent and even coverage throughout the yard. Both of these can be picked up at all major home improvement stores.

  4. Step 4

Use a metal rake. Rake the whole yard as evenly and layered as possible. The will bury the grass seed and fertilizer in the ground. When done with this use your hand. Lightly throw more grass seed around the yard. This seed can just stay on top of the dirt. It will eventually sink in.

  5. Step 5

Water your yard thoroughly. It will help if you have an in ground sprinkler system. If not you will just have to water by hand. If it is possible in your area water your grass three times a day. Try and do this for two weeks. It is very important for your grass to grow to keep the ground wet and moist.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep animals and people off of your grass for two weeks for better results.
  • If you can afford it buy the better fertilizer and grass seed.
