Instructions

    • 1

Lay the jeans flat with the front face up. Cut straight across from one side to the other, approximately 2 inches below the zipper.

    • 2

Cut the front away from the back by cutting the side seam away.

    • 3

Lay the jean front flat and round the corners on the bottom edge.

    • 4

Cut one 3 x 21 strip for the neck strap, two 9 x 12 pieces for the bib, two strips 4 x 45 for the ruffle and two 4 x 27 strips for the ties.

    • 5

Fold the neck strap in half lengthwise, with right sides together. Stitch the raw edges using a 1/4-inch seam. Turn right side out and iron.

    • 6

Lay one bib piece, right side up and position the neck strap on top with the ends on one 9-inch side. Be careful not to twist the neck strap, pin the ends a half inch in from each corner on the 9-inch edge. Lay the other bib piece with the right side down and pin to the bottom bib piece.

    • 7

Starting at the opposite short end, sew a 1/4-inch seam around the bib pieces. Leave an opening for turning.

    • 8

Turn the bib right side out and iron. Stitch the opening closed.

    • 9

Turn the jean apron face down and pin the bottom edge of the bib to the edge of the waistband centered in the middle. Top stitch the bib to the waistband edge, avoiding the button and rivets.

    • 10

With right sides together, sew one end of the 4 x 45 ruffle pieces together using a 1/4inch seam. Iron the seam open. Sew one long side of the 90inch strip with a narrow hem.

    • 11

Knot one end of the crochet cotton thread. With the wrong side up, zig zag over the crochet cotton thread on the raw edge length of the ruffle. Center the crochet cotton thread under the presser foot to avoid catching it in the stitches. At the end of the raw edge length, cut the crochet cotton thread and knot.

    • 12

Pin the center seam of the ruffles raw edge to the center seam of the jean apron bottom edge, with the right sides facing. Pin each end of the ruffle to the end of the jean apron waistband, right side facing.

    • 13

Pull up the crochet cotton thread to create a gather on the ruffle. Pin the ruffle to fit around the jean apron. Sew the ruffle using a 1/2-inch seam.

    • 14

Snip the knots on the crochet cotton thread and pull the thread out. Trim the seam to 1/4 inch.

    • 15

Iron the ruffle to lay down flat.

    • 16

With right sides together, sew one end of the 4 x 27 tie pieces together using a 1/4-inch seam. Fold the long tie piece in half lengthwise with the right sides facing. Sew a 1/4-inch seam along the raw edge of the tie, leaving an opening for turning. Turn right side out. Iron and close the opening.

    • 17

Thread the tie through the belt loops of the jean apron. Center the tie seam over the front button. If there are no loops on the ends of the waistband, top stitch the tie to the waistband.

Tips & Warnings

  • Save the back of the jeans to make another jean apron.
