How to Buy Decorative Accents

Everyone has a friend whose home always looks "done." The pillows are coordinated with the lamp, which coordinates with the picture and the candles. How can you get the same finished look for your home? Read on for a few tips.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Color palette

Step1
Determine the color palette for your home. Typically, you'll have two primary colors that dominate the color of your home and three accent colors.
Step2
Carry small samples of your colors with you. They don't need to be large pillows or lamps, just small swatches or color paint samples. But keep them in your purse so that you've got them whenever you're out.
Step3
Shop local thrift stores, department stores or design stores. You never know where you'll find that perfect picture or lamp, so keep an eye out wherever you go for something that works in your color palette. And keep the receipt in case what you thought might work can be returned.
Step4
Remember this isn't a place to invest. A simple vase in the perfect color can cost $10 at a garage sale or $10,000 at a luxury auction. Price doesn't matter when you're buying something that's simply decorative, so feel free to shop bargains. You want something that makes your home feel more finished, not something to brag about.
Step5
Don't feel intimidated. You can mix styles and finishes if it looks good to you. Remember that this is your home, so if you like it and the colors work, then it's the right choice. And remember to bring things home and try them out; you might find you love it, you might find that it doesn't look quite right in the lighting of your home.
