Find American Food in Puerto Vallarta

Whether you've come to Puerto Vallarta for a weekend visit or an extended stay, sometimes you just need a little slice of home. It can be challenging to find certain items that are common in the United States, like peanut butter, root beer and Half & Half. So whether you are cooking in or going out to eat, here's how you can find some good, old-fashioned American food in Puerto Vallarta. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the hotel zone. Sadly, some visitors to Mexico prefer to eat the food they are used to in their home country instead of sampling some of the amazing, authentic Mexican food found in Puerto Vallarta. Because of this, the tourist zone is chock full of fast-food restaurants and chains. You can find Starbucks, Carl's Jr, McDonald's, Burger King, Subway, Chili's and Outback Steakhouse all in the tourist zone of Puerto Vallarta.

Check out the romantic zone, a.k.a. Old Town. It also has its fair share of American joints, but you won't find any fast-food here. Instead, you can count on American-style sports bars and diners like Johnny's that offer biscuits and gravy and American hamburgers.

Go organic. There are two organic and whole-food stores in Puerto Vallarta. Agro-Gourmet is close to Wal-Mart, and Fruit Forest is in Old Town. In these stores, you can find favorite imported beverages (including root beer, sometimes) and specialty fruits, cheeses and vegetables. Did you know that there are no lemons in Mexico? Well, not exactly: You can find them here.

Try the big supermarkets and warehouse stores. Wal-Mart, Sam's Club and Costco all carry items that make their expatriate shoppers feel at home. You can find a variety of frozen foods, dry goods, sauces and spices that are distinctly American.

Shop at Rizo's. Located in Old Town, Rizo's is expensive, but it offers many, many American products, from Hamburger Helper to marshmallow cream. You can get your fix of nearly anything Yankee at Rizo's.

Tips & Warnings

  • Bring your favorite, must-have items with you. It will be less expensive that way.

  • Pack hard to find spices if you like to cook ethnic foods, like curry or any Asian dishes.
