Lakshmi is the Hindu Goddess of good fortune. During Diwali, the Festival of Lights, devotees worship Lakshmi in her eight forms, called Asta (eight) Lakshmi.

  • Rice grains, puffed rice, coriander and cumin seeds

Instructions

      Celebrate the Five Days of Diwali, the October Festival of Wealth, devoted to Lakshmi. The third day is Lakshmi Puja on Diwali and is the main event of Diwali.

      Clean your house thoroughly. Lakshmi appreciates cleanliness and visits the cleanest homes first. Light lamps in the evening to light Lakshmi's path. Lakshmi's visit brings great fortune and triumph over evil.

      Lay a fresh cloth on a bench or table with a small pile of grains in the center of the cloth. Also place a metal or earthen pitcher on the cloth. Place in the pitcher five leaves, a betel nut, a flower, a coin and some rice grains.

      Place a saucer or small plate with a few rice grains on the pitcher. Sprinkle turmeric in the shape of a lotus over the rice. Place a statue of Lakshmi with a few coins over the turmeric.

      Place a statute of Ganesha to the southwest of Lakshmi on the cloth. Lay books that relate to your occupation with the idol. Perform Puja to Ganesha.

      Invoke Lakshmi with Vedic mantras. Offer flowers to Lakshmi's idol. Sprinkle water and a mixture of milk, ghee, honey and sugar on the idol. Sprinkle with a flower.

      Offer sandalwood paste, saffron paste and fragrance to the idol. Offer Her flowers and lit incense. Offer fruits and sweets and puffed rice. Pour a mixture of puffed rice, coriander and cumin seeds over Her idol.

      Perform a restful Aarti with a small bell. Do not clap hands.
