Those who are seeking a career in law enforcement might consider a position as a deputy sheriff. While other states use these positions by the individual city or on a statewide basis, in California the positions are regulated by the county. Each county is in charge of their own hiring process. If you want to become a deputy sheriff in California you need to start by making sure you meet the minimum requirements for the position.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Make sure you meet the minimum requirements for the position of deputy sheriff. You must be at least 18-20 years old depending on the county, have a high school diploma, be a citizen of the US and have no felony convictions on your police record. In addition they require you to have a California driver’s license and vision of 20/100 or 20/30.
Step2
Study for the written exam by using the study materials available from the public library. Some bookstores may also carry books on how to study for the exam. These books include sample tests so you can see exactly what type of questions you’ll be asked. These questions relate to a number of different areas and things you might experience on the job.
Step3
Take the written exam. The exam is divided into five separate categories: reading comprehension, English grammar, sentence construction, vocabulary and spelling. In addition you’ll be required to write a short essay during the test proceedings. You must pass this exam before working as a deputy sheriff.
Step4
Apply for the deputy sheriff position by visiting the website of your county law enforcement agency or by visiting the station directly. Unlike other states, California allows each individual county to regulate their hiring process and decide who best fits their needs. Once you apply for the job you’ll need to have a background check done.
Step5
Undergo the truth verification exam, which happens during your interview for the position. Then you’ll have to have a psychological evaluation and medical exam. These different things take place over the course of several different appointments at the station. Only after you pass all of these requirements will you be approved for the position.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check with the police department or law enforcement agency in your county. The process tends to change from place to place, though the descriptions laid out here generally fit for most counties. Your county might be slightly different.
  • The entire process from the written test to the job offer is anywhere from three months, which is the minimum to a maximum of six months. This isn’t a position that you’ll find and get quickly so you need to be sure you want it before applying.
