How to Pick Blueberries

Picking blueberries can be a great family activity and save you tons on the cost of fresh fruits. Blueberries in southern Illinois range from $1.29 a pint at the discount grocer to $2.50 on sale at Kroger. With an average of two pints in a lb., the $1.50 a lb. for berries you pick is a lot better. The other advantage of picking them yourself is you know exact freshness. Read on to learn how to pick blueberries.

Things You'll Need:

  • A rope or belt
  • A bucket
  • Insect repellent
  • Sunscreen
  • A cool drink
  1. Step 1

    Find the nearest pick your own farm. Generally, these can be found via the telephone book or advertising in the local newspaper. Check at the local farmer's market as well as many times berry farms will sell excess berries there. You may also want to look for roadside signs advertising pick-your-own berry farms.

  2. Step 2

    Tie a bucket to your waist. Place the bucket as close to directly in front of you as possible. This way you will not have to hold the bucket and will have both hands free for picking berries.

  3. Step 3

    Ask the farm owner what bushes have not been picked recently. Most often, these are the bushes furthest from the parking area. Find a section of bushes that are heavily loaded with full, dark blue berries. Lighter berries which are purple or red are not ripe yet and will taste bitter. They are also harder get off the bush.

  4. Step 4

    Start at the highest branch you can reach. Pull the branch so that it is over the top of your bucket. Then use your thumbs to roll along the clusters of blueberries. With just a little pressure, you will be able to pick the berries and have them drop directly into the bucket. Finish all the branches on one side of tree and then move to the other side or down the row to another bush.

  5. Step 5

    Bring a friend as blueberry picking provides a great opportunity to chat. The actual berry picking requires very little concentration and is very easy once you get the rhythm.

Tips & Warnings
  • Bring a cool drink, because berry picking can be very hot.
  • You may also want to consider going in the early morning hours to pick blueberries to avoid the heat of the day.
  • Time passes quickly while you are paying attention to your berry picking, so apply sunscreen before you head to the farm.
  • It is also a good idea to apply insect repellent as some beetles are very attracted to blueberry bushes.
